Genre Studies

Genres
The way in which we categorise films. They all have their own set of codes and conventions which are adhered to by viewers. The technical codes used by genres are:
- Mise-En-Scene
- Cinematography
- Editing
- Sound
- Narrative

Clip 1 – Hangover (2011)
The extract portrays the comedy genre by using a wide shot at the beginning of the extract. This is effective because it allows the audience to understand what they did to their room in the state they were in.

Clip 2 – Star Trek: Into Darkness
The extract portrays the Sci-Fi genre by using increasingly fast paced music throughout the extract this is effective because it builds tension for the audience and it also adds to the action we are seeing on screen.


Clip 3 – The Expendables 2
The extract portrays the action genre by using fast paced editing this is effective because it helps convey the speed of the action, and it also adds a sense of danger that the protagonists find themselves in.


Clip 4 – Fishtank
The extracts portrays the social realist genre by using relatable settings this is effective because the audience can feel they can relate to the film as it is set in a realistic setting, this also adds to realist aspect the director is trying to create.

At the start of the film sound is used to covey how bad the area he is currently in. for example, in the background we can hear police sirens which suggests that there is crimes occurring in the local area.
The theme of the film is shown here as the father is struggling to become straight as he owes money and is nearly killed as when two members of a gang shoot his cousin.
The theme of homelessness is shown here as he is trying to get a book published but he has nowhere to go and he has no money to make.
